S19-Sun Badge

Although this unusual and attractive badge clearly depicts a sun within a decorative border, its significance and meaning seems unclear. The sun was a relatively popular design for livery badges; used by noble families to identify their household retainers and followers. However, the sun also had strong religious significance and can be taken as a symbol of either; God, Christ or the Virgin Mary.

14th-15th Centuries.

48mm A stylised sun.
